Where have all the books gone?

our living room fireplace

LOL! No, I didn’t burn them. If you remember, I had books in my fireplace for decor. Today, in this not-so-hot Florida weather my fireplace actually has fire in it. Do you like? This is worth posting about because we only get to do this about once a year here in normally crazy-hot South Florida. This is not your typical Florida photo folks. Most people think: Florida & they picture the beach or palm trees or Disney World, Sea World even NASA. I bet most don’t picture cozy fireplaces. I, myself, associate cozy fireplaces with white snowy mountains in Colorado. Or white snowy mountains in Alaska…. basically anywhere with white snowy mountains! So, enjoy this experience with me while it lasts.

I first shared my fireplace with you in my Books in the Fireplace post – Photo 1.
Since that post (I was inspired by my own blog post) my fireplace has looked like Photo 2.
Today in this 49 degree Farenheit weather it looks like the last photo – Photo 3.

book & fire in living room fireplace

Typing the word “Fahrenheit” reminds me of a book I read back in high school called “Fahrenheit 451″ by Ray Bradbury. The elevator pitch for the book is “The novel of firemen who get paid to set books ablaze”. How terribly sad! The idea of books on fire was sad when I read it back in high school & it’s even more sad now that I’m a book-lover. I’m glad that Bradbury’s book is fiction.

I might have mentioned this before but back in the old days books meant wealth. (I’m by no means implying that I’m wealthy! LOL! Most my books are $0.10 a piece from the thrift store.) I can’t repeat this enough… there’s just something about books that just looks good! Very good. This is now the 2nd time you’ll hear me repeat this quote by Cicero, a Roman Philosopher from 106-43 BC that: “A room without books is like a body without a soul.” Cicero: I’m with you buddy!

Well, I’m off… to sit by the warm fire, listen to it crackle & smell it’s sweet burning fumes (oh & I have to go fulfill a photo card order!). Here are a couple questions I’ll leave you with…

Do you have fire going in your fireplace?
If so, where do you live? (I’m curious as to where else fireplace fires are glowing besides here & Colorado & Alaska!)

Have a good weekend!

  1. Wish it was cooler here to have the fire going but it’s just reached 38 deg C here which converts to about 100 deg F!

  2. If I had a fireplace I would have it on. (Stuttgart, Germany) It’s snowing like mad today. I absolutely love your picture number 2 by the way. Much better than picture number 1. Thinking outside the box and getting a great result!

    • I agree Amie – I like photo 2 the best too :) Thanks for your comment. One day I hope to experience a day that’s “snowing like mad”… only for a short time though, I have thin blood :)

  3. Wow! You don’t see that very often in sunny FL! LOVE your fireplace! The books look so cool in it! I love the books that are all packed in there. All of those great colors!! I’ll bet the fire was nice and cozy too.

  4. No, but I need one. It warmed up today to a frigid -25 degrees F, which is 25 degrees warmer than yesterday. Oh well. That’s North Dakota for you.

  5. i like the pic with all the books in the fireplace! great storage idea :)

i live in southern california, so no need for a fire most of the time here either…

I found your blog through etsy forums and just wanted to say hi and that your blog is lovely! have a beautiful weekend!

    xo, Katie

  6. Nope, no fire in the fireplace here, although it’s cold enough for one. Right now we just need the pipes to un-freeze in the kitchen. Awesome, huh? It’s way colder than normal here in Oklahoma as well — highs in the upper teen’s, low of -3 tonight! Our house was built in the 1930’s and we have two beautiful fireplaces, one in the living room and one in our master bedroom, but neither are wood-burning. They both have the cute iron/ceramic ornate inserts that turn on by natural gas and heat up. I wish we could use them, but my husband worries we might burn the house down if we try. One of these days I’m going to have an expert come check them out and tell us they’re safe so we can use them because I bet it would cut down the electric bill for sure!

    • Oh man! Glad I don’t have to worry about pipes freezing. That’s crazy! Awww, I hope you DO get to turn your fireplaces on. I love old homes, but they do have their downsides. :)

  7. Our fireplace was just installed and just in time for a very cold white Maryland winter. I so love it! We have a fire most every night.

  8. It is freezing here in Iowa so I am really loving the photo with the fireplace actually lit – I can almost feel the warmth!

  9. hi! I live in {probably} equally hot arizona – so I can really appreciate your love of the occasional cool spell! I know I do! we don’t actually have a fireplace in our home, but I love yours! {esp the books – great idea!} thanks for nice blog visit!

  10. Looks very toasty! We’ve heard you have had some cold weather. And they say there’s no global warming! I live in Maine, so the cold and snow are a norm here, but the news said southern Florida would be warmer tonight. Nice Blog, I found you through Decor 8, thanks for sharing!

  11. My inlaws live in Florida and you people crack me up. 49 degree weather up hair and we are wearing sweatshirts outside and opening our windows to get some fresh air in the house . (I live in Massachusetts). I long to move South, maybe someday…

My husband flies down to his father’s every year for the SuperBowl and swims in their 60 something degree pool- they freak out, lol.

    • Sometimes I really wish comments had spell check. i try and type as fast as I’m thinking and end up with things like hair, instead of HERE. >sigh< And you, with all the lovely books, what must you think of it. ;)

      • LOL! To be honest, I read your first comment & in my blog editor I corrected your misspelling for you – then I read your second comment & un-corrected it so all would make sense. I agree, I wish they had spell check too :)

  12. I vote for #2! Very clever and good for the environment!!

  13. Very cozy… nothing like a log fire for a cold day… It’s 0 degrees F here, so the fireplace is getting an extra workout here–LOL! Happy Weekend–Keep warm! ;o)

  14. I love what you did with photo 2, that looks wonderful, like a secret hiding place with all of those books. I’m jealous of your fire place. I live in central PA and it is very cold here right now, I would love to have a blazing fire going in my living room. Instread I’m wearing cuddles under my clothes and a house coat… I just removed my knit hat. My husband is a big fan of saving money on the heating bills!

  15. Wow…who would’ve EVER thought that your fireplace would be lit? SHOCK! But it’s a great compliment to a cold, cold day. We actually turned on our fireplace during Christmas but haven’t used it again since then (though our temperature has been between 15-18 degrees!). :( Your fireplace is beautiful though. Love it!

  16. Its plenty cold here as well. Love the idea of books in the fireplace.

  17. Hope you are keeping warm down there, girl! My grandparents are snowbirds this year, and have been freezing their tails off! :)

  18. I would love, love, love a fireplace. Here in California, it’s not all that cold either. But still, a fireplace just brings ideas of coziness and contentment.
