un-upholstered chair in living room

Ok, I’m so blown away by the un-upholstered chair in this living room. It actually took the spot of the Love at First Gasp post I had planned for this week. I just had to share this photo ASAP! I don’t know that I am this bold to leave a chair un-upholstered in my home. Folks, this photo is in a printed decor book: “Perfect English Cottage” by Ros Byam Shaw! What in the world? I’ve always had this idea that home photos inside decor books & magazines were the finished look. In other words, they weren’t still a work in progress… I’ve always understood an un-upholstered chair as being unfinished, a work-in-progress. I’m delighted & even surprised that this purposefully un-upholstered chair was photographed & printed like this! Totally rocking my decor world! It will never be the same again. Almost like a monumental event in my life’s decor timeline – where things will be remembered as being before the printed un-upholstered chair or after the printed un-upholstered chair! Maybe the more I stare at this photo, the more courage will build in me to re-create this idea one day. What are your thoughts? Will this be a stand-out moment in your decor timeline as well? Do you like it? This is bold with a capital B!

Other gorgeous details about this living room worth pointing out… of course, the fabulous tufted sofa. I love tufted – way up there on my list of decor weaknesses. Sadly, I don’t own anything tufted… YET! There is a day, time & resource for all dreams! Then the flannel, plaid throws/blankets… so lumberjack woodworker-ish. They say cozy, warmth & welcome to me. Who would think to mix lumberjack flannel with a French sofa? A little out of the box, but beautiful indeed. Then the purple Moroccan-looking rug. Let’s layer that into the mix… who would think to mix lumberjack flannel, a French sofa & a little taste of Morocco. So wonderfully eclectic. I love it! The un-upholstered chair is the unexpected surprise element of this living room, in my opinion.

This past week I took a home decor style quiz on www.sproost.com. I SO recommend it. I took it three times! I’m mostly French Eclectic with some Vintage Modern & Cottage Chic. This living room from Perfect English Cottage fits right in with ME! I’m so pleased to post about it. Oh and yes, I sure did gasp at first seeing it!

  1. Hi, thanks for your comment on my blog! That lovely purple plant is actually wisteria and no, it’s not my house. i wish it was! I don’t know if it would grow well here in southern california, it might need a wetter climate.

I also like the look of that unupholstered chair, it’s very different and unpretentious. Love your blog, look forward to reading more!

    xo, Katie

  2. There is no way I would have a chair like that in my living room – unless it was totally covered or at least upholstered. I looks comfy though! LOVE the fireplace!

  3. Yep, I love it! And I’m honestly a little surprised that I’ve never seen something like it in the stylings of an Anthropologie catalog. Of course, tufted — love that, too. Especially the mustard leather tufted sofa at Anthropologie right now, for mere pennies, haha. Oh, if my piggybank was that big, I would definitely bust it open for that tufted yellow sofa!

  4. I love the way it looks in the photo, but I couldn’t confidently pull that off in the living room. I am intrigued by that tufted number next to it though…..

    love your posts, Fern!

  5. Looks like a very welcoming room indeed! And I wouldn’t feel one bit guilty for not cleaning and dusting regularly in this room either!

That quiz is fun isn’t it.

  6. I like everything in the room except that chair, LOL!!!! To me it just looks like an unfinished project in the middle of a beautiful room! Could you really expect a guest to sit there? Would you want to sit on it if you were a guest? Am I missing the point?!

    • LOL! :) I love your comment! What I’m in love with about this photo is that someone was this bold to leave a chair purposefully un-upholstered. Blows my mind! The look had to grow on me a bit, but it is rather beautiful to me :)

  7. Isn’t that what love is supposed to do? Rock your world? Change your perspective? And I am with Jane, any room that requires less fussing is a room I could fall in love with.

  8. very cool… a little bit of deconstruction gives the room a warm feeling. ;)

  9. I’ve really enjoyed reading your articles. You obviously know what you are talking about! Your site is so easy to navigate too, I’ve bookmarked it in my favourites :-D

  10. It’s almost cuddly and cute, like The Patchwork Bunny.
