File Cabinet Table

file cabinet in living room

Go easy on me now… My living room is somewhat incomplete. It does works for the time being. I can smile about that. Check out the inspiration photo (bottom left). Gorgeous, isn’t it? First time I ever saw a file cabinet look so great in a living room. It gave me the courage to bring our file cabinet out of hiding – it was cooped up in our closet. I placed it next to our lovely couch, added a little tray on top along with some accessories (books, of course) and voila! Now I have better access to organizing our files as well as a place to put a coffee mug. Great way to give an object more purpose. Not that storing manila folders isn’t significant… now this cabinet looks good doing it AND can help keep sticky coffee from staining my white couch (it’s slipcover – I can wash it, don’t worry)! I’m actually motivated to file away our bills now instead of just putting them in a neat pile one day & a messy pile the next.

The inspiration photo is of Summer & Josh’s 1 bedroom Chicago condo featured in Apartment Therapy. I imagine that in a 1 bedroom condo space is limited so having objects serve multiple purposes probably is be crucial. Very clever! I love the file cabinet idea! I must say I also love their chandelier! It’s what I first noticed in the photo – second was the file cabinet. I’m glad that chandelier caught my eye because today my husband is happy with me that I’m keeping our files nice & neat (hey, I’m happy with me too) and it’s all thanks to that chandelier.

Oh, remember my teeny “Keep Calm & Carry On” poster? Do you spot it above our sofa? Short & sweet today, all. Happy Wednesday!

  1. What a great simple idea. I”m working on rearranging the furniture in our living room right now and adding a few more pieces to make things more cozy.

  2. I LOVE it! That is a fantastic idea! And your living room looks from a page in a magazine, I think! Very cozy… :o )

  3. Great idea. And I love your living room – I agree with Tracy.

  4. I did this in my bedroom! Remember I couldn’t figure out what to do with our filing cabinet and it didn’t fit under the desk? Well a couple of weeks ago I decided to use it as our side table next to the bed – works perfect and is a great size.

  5. This is such a great idea! Mine would need some spray paint but that’s cheaper than a new table! Hmmmm…I’ll have to remember this.

  6. Your space looks great – i love your inspiration photo, too! Did you make your pillows? they’re so cute!

  7. Great job, the file cabinet fits into your living room quite naturally. :)
