Seriously… did you make your bed today? If not, shame on you (just kidding). Did you know that making your bed in the morning sets the tone for the entire rest of the day? It’s true. I’ve heard that multiple times from multiple people. If you don’t believe me try it & you’ll see for yourself. It has the same affect that putting on make-up & getting out of pajamas does. It somehow tells your brain subconsciously that the day has begun now get prepared to face it with your best foot forward… well, that’s my interpretation of it. One of the most valuable pieces of advice I’ll ever give (to be especially followed when having a bad day or during one of life’s difficult seasons) is: make your bed.
For me putting on make-up, getting dressed & making the bed have lifted my mood – most noticeably on a bad day, which I admit I’ve had a couple in my lifetime. Making the bed is so simple, requiring only minutes, yet it has the power to affect hours & hours of one’s day. Order is a powerful thing. Order is a beautiful thing. In my opinion, our eyes were made to greatly dislike chaos – most especially when experiencing chaotic situations, seasons. So, do it already! Make your bed.

Directly across from our bedroom is our daughters’ bedroom. How fast toys make it from their side of the hallway & end up in our bedroom. Ugh! Our girls must think mommy’s a broken record: “No, mommy doesn’t want toys in her bedroom”… repeated day after day. I think most moms can relate to needing a bit of an escape at the end of a kid-filled day. To escape to a master bedroom cluttered with toys is no escape at all. Rather to enter an organized, bed-made room just makes one exhale a peaceful “ahh” at just walking in. I think dads can appreciate this kind of escape as well.
Speaking of kids – are you wondering when you’ll ever find the time to make your bed with kids in the picture? I don’t have an answer to that one. LOL! Preferably some time in morning. All I can say is that, whether you have 2 kiddos like me or 6 like Brad & Angelina, making your bed is just a small investment you’re making into YOU. We need to invest into us. I heard Colin Cowie say once (I’m paraphrasing) that: “Our life is like a bank account. We can’t only make withdrawals. We have to make some deposits.” I’m considering making your bed a small deposit. (Paraphrase taken from his “Colin Cowie Chic” book.)
Another thing: I love hotels… I love the white bedding that most hotels use. I love the white towels that most hotels use. So easy to clean (with just a bit of bleach). So sharp and crisp looking – welcoming, simple, yet elegant. Need I say more? Do you get why our bedding is white? It reminds me of a hotel. That’s a good feeling for me. Actually, it also reminds me that when I’m home I get to wear the “maid” hat – as the luxury of a wonderful maid is no longer there, but most days I’m ok with that! LOL! Oh, the hats us women juggle!

No I did not make the bed… I need to change the covers after the baby threw up on them last night – you’re absolutely right it does set the tone – the whole flats upended and I am a person who loves and works best with order. I have bedroom order envy!
LOL – “bedroom order envy”!
I remember baby-throw-up days very well… hang in there mama.
I can’t Fern,my husband is still inside..lol…
LOL!
Well, sad to say I hardly ever make the bed. Hubby is the last one out of it, and I don’t go upstairs again till it’s time to crawl back in it. But my bed doesn’t look like the one above either
I could not agree more. YES mine is made…everyday!
i really liked these windows above the head of the bed! and I made my bed, but now i will undo it ’cause it’s bedtime here, hehe. kiss
oh.. i did not make my bed this morning. eeeep!
Your bed looks so nice and tidy
I never make my bed and I never made my kids make their beds either
I am a little obsessive about the rest of the house being picked up and in order, so I had to give everyone a break on the bed making
But I get your point, I am sitting at the computer in my PJ’s, uh, oh
T.
LOL! I’m SO smiling with you
No I didn’t make the bed today! Some days I do and some days I don’t! I’m usually up before hubby and that’s when I don’t!
Oh, yes, I quite agree too! A tidy = a mostly tidy day… Occasionally on the weekend I let it slip a bit, but during the week I’m very fastidious about making the bed before facing the day. Beautiful room… love the embroidered cushion! Happy Weekend
)
Some days I wake up and look to my right and it looks like my bed has never been slept in! (okokok…yes its true i sleep alone
But other days looks like a tornado hits the bed.
You are so right… taking just the 30 seconds to tidy up and start all new makes the day start out right.
Thanks for sharing!
(ooh and i agree with you.. I love crisp whites) I will break mine out in the spring… for now though I use the winter as good excuse for the darker my rich color tones.
I make my bed every day except Sunday. That’s the day of rest for me and I often slip back into bed after church for a little nap.
I LOVE making my bed. Makes me feel clean…plus…I love a tidy house. BUT…my husband seems to believe that making the bed isn’t that important. He needs to read this…ASAP!
My bed is the focal point in my room. When the bed is made the room looks finished.
I have a stead fast rule. Last one out has to make the bed. My husband does a wonderful job at it too!
I bought the hubs all Ralph Lauren bedding, from different outlet stores of course, cheap cheap cheap! The look is more masculine and I think he likes the look and really enjoys making the bed now.
I have been neglecting my bed lately, I admit that. Your post has inspired me to be more dilligent about making it. And, as Fabiana said, my husband is not exactly helpful in my efforts. Do you think the bed still has the same effect if you work away from home all day?
By the way, are those photos of your bedroom? It looks FANTASTIC! I looooove the four-post bed!
I don’t know if it has the same effect when you work away from home… I imagine it does have a greater influence on the stay-at-homers, just a guess
Yes, that is our master bedroom – one of my favorite rooms in our home. Thanks for the compliment
How very true. The other thing that sets the tone of my day is getting out of my pj’s and into clothes with shoes on ASAP! I’m a stay at home mom, so this doesn’t always happen
Thanks for the post, great reminder!
I am notorious for not making my bed. My mother finds it mortifying. Maybe after reading this post I might start making the effort!
Oh lordy I can sooooo relate to this . I have 4 boys and if my bed isn’t made I feel like a mess.Their beds too. Total insanity but I totally agree. It’s one of the few things that make me feel human.Toys also they can live peacefully down in the basement . I really need to feel like the living room and dining room are for grown ups and I’m not going to break my neck on something waking across the room. Whew – that’s my rant for the day !!! Thanks for letting me get that out : )
