Books in the Fireplace

If your fireplace is in crazy-hot South Florida like mine you gotta think of something pretty to put in there all 363 days of the year that you don’t get to use it! I put books (and candles inside vases). The other 2 “cold” days of the year in Florida you can enjoy burning actual wood. My husband wanted this whole cozy, Starbucks-like feel to happen in our living room which is why the colors used are what they are… I’d say the look was achieved. When it came to the stacked books in the fireplace though, my thoughts were “less is more”. And all in all, the books do make a statement, an unexpected, fun one in a tamed sort of way. I’m showing you 2 photos below (from Apartment Therapy) where more certainly means more… untamed, bold, in-your-face. I LOVE the super crammed, cluttered look with the books in the fireplace as well (am thinking to go back and forth between the crowded look & simplified look in my fireplace too).  I just thought to share both options. Btw, the candles look so funky because they are from Ikea. Note to self: don’t buy candles from Ikea anymore. The vases are from Pottery Barn, I got those as a wedding gift 5 years ago.

  1. Love that idea… unfortunately ours is a gas fireplace and we use ours most of the winter.. so no books in there!

  2. I really like the idea. Yours looks very cozy :) We don’t use our fireplace hardly at all here either (Northern California) so I should consider making it look nicer than it does!

  3. i love your blog!

books in the fireplace, they look very cool! here that would be a problem! thank you for stopping by!

  4. Interesting. We don’t use our currently and have our children’s wooden animals that they got for Christmas one year sitting there. I really like the books with candles.

    • I’m always trying to hide our kids’ toys so that our living room looks more grown up & doesn’t have primary-colored toys everywhere… but I think I could leave wooden animal toys visible too… fun! :)

  5. I like your idea alot! great blog, I really like all of your book ideas! I love books too. debi

  6. This is such a wonderful idea! We have so many books and a fireplace that has been closed off so this would work PERFECTLY! Great idea. I am so glad I stopped by this blog, it’s fantastic!

  10. This is a great idea!

I live in Australia and not many homes here have fireplaces, but i think this is a lovely use for an unused fireplace :)

  11. OMG, what a wonderful idea!! I should hire a cleaning crew to get all the soot out of our fireplace and then do this! :P
