Love at First Gasp #5

hudson hotel library nyc

Gasp, gasp, gasp! Hudson Hotel Library in NYC. For starters… who in the world created this gigantic, shiny upside-down-bowl-looking chandelier? And how in the world did they hang it? Remarkable! Just remarkable. Truthfully, I’d be scared to stand under the thing! I’d prefer to admire it from afar. The chandelier, the books, the artwork, the wooden wall panels – all worthy of a love at first gasp! I’d love to experience this room in person one day… maybe on our next trip to NYC? No pressure, hubby – I’m only kidding. Looks crazy pricey. For now, I’ll admire it via photos. So, have you gasped yet?

Tutorial: Floating Bookshelf

floating bookshelf

Ok, this is my first tutorial… maybe my only tutorial. Who knows! A friend of mine named Becky taught me how to make these awesome recycled floating bookshelves. I once sold them in an Etsy shop, but I now don’t have the time or desire to sell them anymore. So, I thought I’d just teach you all how to make them yourself, just like Becky once taught me. Kind of like Confucius’s famous quote: “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” Somewhat applicable, right? This tutorial has been my list of “to do’s” for months now. I’m so happy to be sharing it with you.

Where have all the books gone?

our living room fireplace

LOL! No, I didn’t burn them. If you remember, I had books in my fireplace for decor. Today, in this not-so-hot Florida weather my fireplace actually has fire in it. Do you like? This is worth posting about because we only get to do this about once a year here in normally crazy-hot South Florida. This is not your typical Florida photo folks. Most people think: Florida & they picture the beach or palm trees or Disney World, Sea World even NASA. I bet most don’t picture cozy fireplaces. I, myself, associate cozy fireplaces with white snowy mountains in Colorado. Or white snowy mountains in Alaska…. basically anywhere with white snowy mountains! So, enjoy this experience with me while it lasts.

spiral staircase full of books

This is the first of many weekly posts that will be called: Love At First Gasp. Refers to items, photos, rooms, decor, furniture, accessories & such that “had me at hello” – 2nd Jerry Maguire movie reference in the history of this blog! LOL! These Love At First Gasp occurrences happen quite regularly for me. A gasp is the default reaction, but sometimes these lovely finds cause me to do a double-take, my eyes widen, mouth drops & the word “WOW” comes out of my mouth – sometimes with a bit of drool (just kidding on the droll). These Love At First Gasp finds are things that sometimes will be out of my means because of price, distance, space limitations, you get the idea, but a girl can always dream!

Books Under Lamps

Cicero, a Roman Philosopher from 106-43 BC once said: “A room without books is like a body without a soul.” (In case you don’t know who he is, click on his name.) I couldn’t agree more. Well said, don’t you think? Pottery Barn was my original inspiration for using books as decor. Then I began to realize that almost every decor book and magazine out there has a book somewhere in a room…

Books in the Fireplace

If your fireplace is in crazy-hot South Florida like mine you gotta think of something pretty to put in there all 363 days of the year that you don’t get to use it! I put books (and candles inside vases). The other 2 “cold” days of the year in Florida you can enjoy burning actual wood. My husband wanted this whole cozy, Starbucks-like feel to happen in our living room which is why the colors used are what they are…

Who Needs a Mouse Pad?

Out with the old rubber, cloth-top mouse pad & in with a book, literally! Why not? It’s the same idea: flat surface, cloth top… works for me! Looks much more interesting & unique to the eye. Great way to add a little color to a room, a small surprise-element even. I LOVE books – I try & use them everywhere I can as much as I can. Books give such a lived-in, cozy look. Trust me on this one! Flip through a Pottery Barn catalog…
